These Quotes Inspire Me...

Exercise is essential to one's health. Everyone seems to think so, from medical practitioners to philosophers, from great leaders to religious figures. Fitness quotes may be cliché, but some of them do make a lot of sense. Here are some quotes that inspire me:

"It is exercise alone that supports the spirits, and keeps the mind in vigor" ~Marcus Tullius Cicero

"Physical fitness is not only one of the most important keys to a healthy body, it is the basis of dynamic and creative intellectual activity" ~ John Fitzgerald Kennedy

"A man's health can be judged by which he takes two at a time - pills or stairs" ~ Joan Welsh

"Lack of activity destroys the good condition of every human being, while movement and methodical physical exercise save it and preserve it" ~ Plato

"The greatest wealth is health" ~ Virgil

"To keep the body in good health is a duty... otherwise we shall not be able to keep our mind strong and clear" ~ Buddha

"Motivation is what gets you started. Habit is what keeps you going" ~ Jim Ryan

"Take care of your body, then the rest will automatically become stronger" ~ Chuang Tzu

Putting everything together, here's what we get: Our health is very important as it is the root of everything-- our happiness, sense of well-being, longevity of our lives, mental health, and many more. It is our responsibility to keep it in good condition. You don't have to be a philosopher or a doctor to know this. We at Train Like A Boxer, will make sure that we keep you healthy by providing you with physical training that won't bore you, guiding you in your health and nutrition needs, and keeping you motivated to achieve your fitness goals!

So what are you waiting for? Set your first trial workout with Train Like A Boxer now or grab the Train Like A Boxer DVD if working out at home is more of your thing. You've heard it from great poet, Virgil. "The greatest wealth is health." So take action NOW!

How to COMBAT the BIG S.

Have you ever felt stressed because of the daily grind? Have you always thought that you are too busy to workout? Do you seem to feel that your inactivity is pulling you down? I’m pretty sure all of us have felt this way in one way or another. We feel helpless, and just resign to the negativity. But guess what, we can do something about it.

Numerous studies have shown that exercise boosts self-esteem and helps relieve stress. Whenever we exercise, our brains emit endorphins, which are said to be the brain’s feel-good neurotransmitters. Endorphins magically improve our moods and sense of well-being, as well as fight against sources of bad vibes such as stress and pain. Notice how good you feel during and after a workout. You may not notice it at that moment, but you tend to forget the day’s worries whenever you focus on running in the treadmill or lifting weights. You feel invigorated after a good workout as well. It just shows how exercise not only improves physical health, but helps us become psychologically healthy as well.

Train Like A Boxer
provides a workout that will not only nourish your body, but will also boost your confidence and relieve stress. Imagine losing an ounce of stress with every punch. Visualize how fit you will be with the continuous amount of effort that you put in each session. And the best part is, you can have your training scheduled at your own convenience. If meeting up with a trainer is not your cup of tea, you can also grab the Train Like a Boxer DVD and work out at the comforts of your own home, at your most convenient time. Isn’t that a sweet deal?

Don’t let stress bring you down! Try the Train Like A Boxer workout now!

Have you seen this yet?

The movie, "The Blind Side" has got to be one of the most inspiring movies that I've ever seen. The rest of the sports world think so too as it was awarded "Best Sports Movie" in the recent ESPY awards. If you haven't seen it yet, here's a brief summary: the story is about football superstar Michael Oher, and how he got to where he is now. This kid from the ghetto's life was transformed when Leigh Anne Tuohy adopted him, and gave him a real sense of family. He was taught to play football, having only his size as his edge among others players. With the love and support his foster family and his team, Michael was able to attain a scholarship with the school that he wanted to play for.

We can learn so many valuable lessons from this movie that we can apply to our own lives:

· VALUE OF SUPPORT
First, we see the value of support. Every person, in order to succeed, needs the support of those around them. The famous quotation, "No man is an island" encapsulates this idea perfectly. Michael needed the love and support of his foster family and his teammates to boost his morale-and we saw how this worked wonders on him.

· DETERMINATION AND PERSEVERANCE
The value of determination and perseverance were also highlighted in this movie. Michael was a shining example of this in the movie during the times when he was just being taught football, and the times when he was trying to do good in his academics. His determination and perseverance kept him from giving up.

· DISCIPLINE

Michael had to endure major adjustments in his lifestyle because of the drastic changes he experienced. His new training routine, for instance, instilled in him discipline that brought out the best in him as an athlete. This applies to all of us when it comes to achieving goals.

All the values I talked about above are all essential in achieving one's goals. For those of us who want to keep fit and healthy, it's not just about the physical training, it is also about conditioning our minds to reach our goal. In Train Like A Boxer, we provide you training that will surely help you achieve your fitness goals, and will also condition and keep your mind in focus. More importantly, I can assure you that you have my 110% support. After all, Train Like A Boxer is more than just a fitness program, it's a lifestyle.

Rocky Balboa's mistakes (a follow up)

WHAT ROCKY SHOULD HAVE DONE:

1. Concentrate on speed, speed and more speed! He did some strength work but they focused on too much power. There was no balance.

2. Shadow boxing with 60 pound weights... are you kidding me? He should have shadow boxed with 2 pound weights. It would be better.

3. Boxed some more--- practiced some more to focus on skill. From a long lay off the boxing style movements are the ones that suffer. He should have done more of that.

BUT AT THE END OF THE DAY IT WAS JUST A MOVIE. But I just felt like giving an input for the newbies who think that boxing training is done that way. The answer is a big NO!

Check out the TRAINLIKEABOXER DVD TODAY!

Rocky Balboa's training mistakes

Ok here are his mistakes:

1.He is lifting so heavy. That will make him slow. Oh yes, his coach mentioned that he can't do anything else because he has arthritis or something, but what he is doing actually aggravates whatever he feels.

2.He doesn't have any boxing equipment or any speed work whatsoever. Now, his speed suffers. In boxing, you have to consider factors such as agility, fast-twitch movements, the snap of the punches etc. Rocky didn't take that into account.

3.I know it's just a movie, but he exaggerated all the lifting. Strength work is valuable in this sport. However, you have to do it right. What he is doing is not in the scope of boxing training. Maybe, competitive power- lifting.

Rocky Balboa is still an awesome movie about life. It teaches all of us to never give up no matter what the obstacles are. I think the training scene is still awesome though. When I watched this movie for the first time all I wanted to do was train. The fight scenes are not realistic but... THE MOVIE IS A CLASSIC!

It definitely has the TRAINLIKEABOXER Awesome Guarantee!

Manny Pacquiao: MIND CONDITIONING

This video has the TRAINLIKEABOXER AWESOME GUARANTEE!

If you look at this video, you think he's crazy. But he is certainly not. He is preparing for all the punishment he will receive in the ring. The hits to the stomach actually apply the concept of ISOMETRICS--- or developing strength by "holding". But more than that, it is the development of MENTAL TOUGHNESS.

BOXING TRAINING DEVELOPS MENTAL TOUGHNESS!

Reflections on Edwin Valero's death

The boxing world is in shock. One of its shining stars took his wife's life and later, his own life. If you have been following the news, Edwin Valero was troubled lately with drug and alcohol problems. His set of problems piled up as the days went by and what finally did it was his killing of his wife, Jennifer Viera de Valero.

What a shame. At first, I felt sorry for his two daughters and of course, his wife Jennifer. But I knew right then that his boxing career was over. 27 wins, no losses and 27 wins by way of knockout, PRETTY IMPRESSIVE. He was even being groomed as one of Pacquiao's next opponents in what could have been a superfight between two brawlers, two southpaws with utmost power, two heroes of their respective countries and two men who personify the word "warrior" in every way (in the ring).

There's a lot of what if's in this. But here is the take from TRAINLIKEABOXER on that: BOXING is supposed to cultivate the warrior spirit--- the ability to fight your own demons. A champion that Valero was, he was not a champion outside the ring. For me, that is disappointing. I think that training for boxing should be your way out of trouble. It is the way for most boxers and boxing enthusiasts but what just happened lately is just sad, just so unfortunate. I can only judge the man based on his accomplishments in the ring, not the person himself. All I can say is, Rest in Peace Edwin Valero and Jennifer Viera de Valero.

Use boxing for a better world. That could be a cliche, but hey, TRAINLIKEABOXER means it.

BOXING TRAINING: YOU DECIDE

THERE ARE DIFFERENT WAYS TO TRAIN IN BOXING. TO DO A COMPLETE BOXER'S ROUTINE, YOU NEED TO CONSIDER THESE ARGUMENTS. YOU'VE PROBABLY HEARD THEM. NOW IT'S TIME TO DECIDE.

Technique Right Or Wrong? You Be the Judge!

Styles make fights. Sometimes, the boxing style is the difference in the result of the match. This, coupled with conditioning could determine the winner. The style comes from a background. It is self- taught or instructed by somebody. That somebody is the teacher--- in this case the TRAINER.

Boxing is a very tricky sport. Training is crucial. There are several training methodologies you can follow that are believed superior over another style--- believed by the trainer himself and not the public who know boxing. Allow me to show you 4 points here:

TO RUN OR NOT TO RUN?

I am still old school when it comes to this. I still believe in doing roadwork. For sure running can be boring but it is a prerequisite in developing stamina--- both short and long term. A lot of fitness experts have ruled out this one to give way to interval training instead of roadwork. They have a good point but in my opinion--- WHY NOT DO BOTH?

TO LIFT OR NOT TO LIFT?

Boxing training has evolved in the past years. Now, they have incorporated strength training to the workouts. In the past, lifting weights is considered a mortal sin for boxers. It was believed to slow somebody down and eventually drop the arms in the latter stages. However, there is a proper way to do it and that's by lifting low weights with high repetitions. This improves the power and speed without the fear of bulking up. My personal preference in developing strength is by using bodyweights through circuits and plyometrics, I am not a big fan of lifting weights but strength training is an integral part of the program. The choice is your--- weights or something else.

TO MOVE TO THE NEXT, OR STAY?

Most of my clients are fitness enthusiasts. I don't think it's very necessary to stick to one technique until they perfect it. We only have so much time to devote to working out so the progressive system of training that the TRAIN LIKE A BOXER program suggests is ideal. Again, there is nothing wrong to "perfect" a move first before going to the next. I believe that an individual can develop the basic skills in the long run. It is the trainer's job to correct the mistakes as you move along (individuals vary in terms of athleticism and other factors so skill levels vary no matter what). Time is valuable, it can't be wasted!

CHECK ON BASICS OR MOVE ON TO COMPLEXITY?

In my opinion, a few sessions focusing on the basics are essential to build the foundation. Complex combinations and techniques should be taught depending on the skill level of the trainee. Every trainee is different, that's what the trainer should understand. On the other hand, some trainers believe in "baptism of fire" or simply putting the trainee on a degree of difficulty for quick adjustment to the sport. In boxing, there is always a risk to injury which makes it the most demanding sport out there. One must take caution. Each has its own advantages and disadvantages. It's up to the trainee to find the positive in what is taught.

That is just how training in the sport works. It depends on the personalities involved--- trainer, trainee and team. Saying that one technique is superior over the other is baseless. Styles make fights and there's a counter to every counter. It is unfair to say that my preferred technique is WRONG. The "statement" disregards all the sacrifices I have done to be personally excellent in what I do. The track record speaks for itself and there's no doubt about it. Trainers and trainees don't match all the time, plain and simple. That is just how the world turns.

I would like to dedicate this article to all my fantastic past and present (and future) clients who stuck with me through the positive and negative. You are the reason why the Train like a Boxer program continues to evolve with our collective hard work and perseverance. Thank you very much for being solidly behind me and my system. Congratulations to the best clients in the world! Our continued loyalty towards each other is the reason why WE SUCCEED!

Who doesn't want it fast?

Most people are busy with "daily things". And I am sure you are reading this because somehow, you care about yourself. By "care" I mean physically. Exercise is an important component of a healthy lifestyle. That is common knowledge. We need to find time for it. I know, you might say, I got other more important things to do. But sadly, if you don't make time for it, you will go downhill. So, my solution is this:

DO IT FAST!

DO IT FAST.... INTENSE!
DO IT FAST.... EFFECTIVE!
DO IT FAST... BY DOING THE TRAINLIKEABOXER PROGRAM (of course I need to say that LOL)

A minimum of a 20 minute workout is what you need AT THE LEAST to maintain a somewhat healthy living. That is minimum. For you to gain results, you have to do it EFFECTIVELY.

So, try to make good use of your time. Do your workouts in that time frame and you'd me amazed with the results---- and the way it will make a difference in your day!

So who doesn't want it fast?

I for one want it fast, you need to do it fast as well!

TRAINLIKEABOXER Opinion the ideal fights out there

Just yesterday Andre Berto backed out of his January 30th clash against Shane Mosley because of the damages in his native Haiti. I don't blame him for doing that.

Here is the ideal TRAINLIKEABOXER scenario: Let Mayweather fight Mosley in May while Pacquiao dukes it out against Joshua Clottey. Let the winners face each other in a megafight in the fall. Have Andre Berto get a couple of fights and then fight the IBF Champion, Jan Zaveck or whoever the champion of that organization is later that year (what a joke). And then the winners of these bouts can face each other for the Undisputed Welterweight Championship of the world!

Who probably wonder why I am writing this right now.... Well, I am also interested in studying how they train for these bouts and the possible outcomes of course.

So tell me who you want TRAINLIKEABOXER TO STUDY THE MOST and share those tactics with all of you???

Pacquiao? Clottey? Mayweather? Mosley? Berto?

ONLY TIME WILL TELL!

How Intense should intense be?

The TRAINLIKEABOXER Program suggests that intensity should always go on.

If you are not in the level of optimum performance, and/or there may be physical limitations due to injury the best way to go ahead with working out is to IMPROVISE or MODIFY!

Improvise: Use whatever you may have. In the case of the Train Like a Boxer Intense Wotkouts DVD, it emphasizes on No Equipment which means using the body to workout!

Modify: If you cannot do a full pushup, try doing it with your knees on the ground. Build your way to strength, no rush! The boxing workouts help you finish all these strength and conditioning drills and vice versa!

Train hard,
Lawrence Ragos
